Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a renewable energy generation technology that utilizes the natural temperature difference in tropical oceans between the surface water and deep water. The ocean surface absorbs a large part of the sun’s energy warming the top layer, while the deep ocean remains cold. In tropical oceans, OTEC can transform abundant thermal energy into electricity generating 24/7, day and night, complementing other intermittent renewable energy systems such as wind turbines or solar panels. Of all the ocean energy resources, such as thermal, wave, tidal, osmotic and currents it is the thermal resource that provides the most interesting opportunities for the tropics.

Bluerise’s solutions provide a vast amount of clean and renewable energy at fixed, competitive pricing, with a simple integration into island electricity grids, replacing oil and diesel based generation, such as often found in the Caribbean.
Promising initial markets for OTEC are tropical islands and coastal regions. These regions, with their population centers near the coast, are now experiencing rapid growth in energy demand. Fortunately they also have the advantage of having the ideal conditions to deploy OTEC to fully meet their energy needs.
The enormous global potential of OTEC is increasingly visible, not least because leading publications such as the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and IIASA Global Energy Assessment reports acknowledge its huge technical and economic potential. The potential of OTEC is estimated to meet the current total global electricity demand many times at competitive costs to current fossil driven technologies.
Bluerise is currently in the process of implementing our first 500kW OTEC plant on the island of Curaçao. This will be one of the World’s first commercial OTEC facilities, opening up many new opportunities to scale up and commercialize OTEC power plants to a wide market.
